Veronica “Kay” Freeman is a dedicated public servant with decades of experience in workforce development, community health, and education. A proud two-time graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Kay holds both an undergraduate and Master's degree, and she has established herself as an emerging leader in higher education. Known for her ability to leverage media and social marketing strategies, she has successfully advanced student engagement and advocated for high-risk, minority populations throughout her career. Kay’s passion for serving underrepresented communities is evident in her extensive leadership roles. As the former Healthy Start Grant Director at UNC Pembroke, she managed budgets ranging from $400,000 to $2 million, spearheading programs to reduce health disparities and improve community health outcomes. She is also a certified facilitator for Positive Childhood Alliance Connections Matter (trauma resilience) and Youth Mental Health First Aid, equipping her to address critical challenges affecting youth and families. In her current role as Transfer Coordinator Advocate for the NASNTI (Native American Serving Nontribal Institutions) Grant at Robeson Community College, Kay works tirelessly to improve access, retention, and leadership opportunities for Native American students and other underserved populations. Her commitment to rural economic development is further demonstrated through her certification from the Rural Economic Development Institute (REDI), presented by the NC Rural Center. An active community leader, Kay has served on numerous boards, including the Robeson County Disaster Recovery Coalition and Healthy Robeson. She has maintained a nonprofit food pantry since 2007, providing vital resources to families in need. As a grant consultant and recipient of multiple awards, she has consistently brought innovative programs to life in her community. Kay’s dedication to role modeling, mentoring, and equipping the next generation of leaders, particularly among minority populations, continues to be the hallmark of her career. Her visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to service inspire those around her to build healthier, more resilient communities.
